Angel Otom delivered the Philippines’ lone gold medal at the World Para Swimming Series in Fuji-Shizuoka, Japan, winning the women’s 50m backstroke in 47.89 seconds. She also claimed a bronze medal in the 50m butterfly event.
Competing in the S5 and SM5 classifications, Otom has established herself as one of the country’s top para-athletes despite being born with a congenital upper limb deficiency.
Earlier this year, she starred at the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand, winning five gold medals and one silver, while breaking an 18-year tournament record in the 100m backstroke S4-S5 event.
As she continues to represent the Philippines on the international stage, Otom remains focused on her long-term goal of competing at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
