A special highlight of this project is the bespoke, luxurious walk-in closet, tailored for the homeowner, a collector and professional in the fashion business. More than just storage, this spacious dressing room is a dedicated showcase for a curated collection of luxury fashion items. It features custom millwork, integrated display lighting, and intelligently organized spaces, making the daily ritual of dressing a truly inspiring experience.

A Giant Teak Abacus That Really Works!

This house was originally a project where 8020 Decor was hired solely to handle the interior decoration based on a design the client already had. However, the client later entrusted us with designing a centerpiece for the entrance foyer that would become a unique feature of the home. So, we designed a giant, functional teak abacus.

The abacus symbolizes intelligence, calculation, and commerce — fitting because the client is a businessperson. They also have young children, so we thought it would be a fun toy where up to three kids could race each other in doing calculations at the same time.
We intentionally make it a Japanese-style abacus, where the top row has a single bead representing the number 5 (unlike the Chinese style, which has two beads on the top row). It's placed vertically and has three sets of abacuses so three children can play simultaneously. We chose the Japanese-style abacus because it’s the same type used in Smart Brain mental arithmetic programs, which teach kids to calculate quickly. I studied it as a child, and it greatly improved my mental math. If the kids get to learn and play by racing each other on this giant abacus, it should be a lot of fun.

As for materials, the columns are made entirely from solid Burmese teak. The base consists of small teak blocks joined together and then covered with a solid surface layer, making it strong enough for children to step on. The 195 abacus beads are custom-turned from champak wood, with each bead hand-sanded and painted individually. The beads are mounted on solid brass rods with a 20mm diameter and can move freely along the rods.

บ้านหลังนี้เดิม 8020 decor เข้าไปรับเหมาตกแต่งอย่างเดียวตามแบบที่ลูกค้ามีอยู่แล้ว แต่ลูกค้ามอบหมายเพิ่มให้เราออกแบบ Center Piece ตรงโถงทางเข้าที่จะเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของบ้าน เลยออกแบบเป็นลูกคิดไม้สักขนาดยักษ์ที่ใช้ได้จริงขึ้นมา เพราะลูกคิดเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของสติปัญญา การคิดคำนวณ การค้าขาย เพราะลูกค้าทำการค้า และก็มีลูกเล็กๆ ด้วย น่าจะเป็นของเล่นที่สนุก และเด็ก 3 คนแข่งกันคิดเลขพร้อมกันได้ด้วย

ลูกคิดที่ออกแบบเป็นลูกคิดแบบญี่ปุ่น คือแถวบนจะมีลูกเดียวแทนเลข 5 (ถูกคิดจีนแถวบนมี 2 ลูก) พลิกวางในแนวตั้ง มีลูกคิด 3 ชุดให้เด็ก 3 คนสามารถเล่นได้พร้อมกัน สาเหตุที่เลือกลูกคิดญี่ปุ่นเพราะเป็นลูกคิดแบบเดียวกับที่ Smart Brain จินตคณิตคิดไวใช้สอนเด็ก ตอนเด็กๆ ผมเคยเรียน มีผลอย่างมากทำให้คิดเลขไว ถ้าเด็กๆ ได้เรียน และได้มาเล่น มาแข่งกันคิดเลขบนลูกคิดยักษ์ น่าจะสนุกดี

สำหรับวัสดุ ตัวเสาเป็นไม้สักพม่าจริงทั้งหมด (solid wood) ตัวฐานเป็นไม้สักท่อนเล็กต่อกันแล้วปิดผิวทับเพื่อให้เป็นไม้ solid จึงมีความแข็งแรงเด็กสามารถเหยียบได้ ตัวลูกคิด 195 ลูกเป็นไม้จำปาสั่งกลึงพิเศษ ช่างต้องมานั่งขัดทำสีทีละลูก ลูกคิดจะถูกติดตั้งในแกนทองเหลืองแบบตันเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลาง 20mm ลูกคิดสามารถเลื่อนไปมาได้อิสระ
