🐠 Explore Shark Island’s Amazing Marine Life 🤿

Shark Island is a tiny rocky islet just 800 metres south of Koh Tao, offering some of the island’s best snorkeling and diving. 🦈🌊

Despite its name, Shark Island wasn’t named after sharks. It gets its name from its shark fin-shaped silhouette when viewed from certain angles (pic. 1). Locals call it Gong Sai Daeng, with Gong meaning pinnacle and Sai Daeng (pic. 7) referring to the nearby beach.

The northwest side features shallow coral reefs perfect for snorkelers, while divers head to the deeper eastern slopes, where depths exceed 30 metres. Expect to spot turtles, groupers, colourful schools of raccoon butterflyfish (pic. 4), nudibranchs, and beautiful soft coral gardens (pic. 2). During the right season, lucky visitors may even encounter whale sharks (pic. 5), Bryde’s whales, or pilot whales! 🐢🐠🐋

Shark Island is uninhabited and easy to reach. Rent a kayak from Sai Daeng Beach (less than 10 minutes) or Aow Leuk Bay (15–20 minutes), or hire a local taxi boat. Just be aware that currents between Koh Tao and the island can sometimes be strong. Dive boats also visit the site daily. 🚣‍♀️🤿

Most visitors never make it to Lang Khai, but those who do are rewarded with one of Koh Tao’s most incredible snorkeling spots! 🌊

Lang Khai actually has two beautiful bays; Lang Khai Bay and the smaller Lad Bay. Massive granite boulders, colorful hard corals, and sea anemones create the perfect home for giant groupers, blacktip reef sharks, and even hawksbill turtles (pic. 7)! 🐢🦈

Strong swimmers and freedivers can also explore the lesser-known sea cracks, narrow half-submerged caverns hidden among the rocks (pic. 4, 5). One even leads to a tiny tiny secret beach (pic. 6) when the tide allows! 🌊🪨

Just around the corner, Lad Bay offers breathtaking cliff views from Moondance Magic View Resort and easy access to another fantastic snorkeling spot at King Kong Rock, where beautiful harp coral (pic. 2) begins at around 12 meters deep. 🤿✨
