In this talk we will provide an updated perspective from our experiences deploying and operating a number of routing security mechanisms at Google to protect users of Google services and customers of Google Cloud.
We will present our experiences and lessons learned, some of which are particular to Cloud providers, or unique to Google’s global network. Examples include differences in the scale of RPKI invalid routes received at our peering edge vs. the public Internet, considerations for hosting and advertising third-party routes, motivations for operational simplifications such as deprecating route server connections in IXPs, and the need for safety mechanisms and automation when deploying RPKI origin validation.
We hope our experiences will provide interesting new data to the community from a Cloud provider perspective, and also inform the implementation of routing security measures in other networks.
