THE SLEEPING GIANT

Off the west coast, at the far end of the Di**le Peninsula, lies an island: The Sleeping Giant – or The Dead Man (An Fear Marbh). Its Irish name, Inis Tuaisceart, means “northern island.”

Its shape has watched over the Di**le Peninsula for centuries, shifting with the tides and the light. From 2022–23 we lived on the edge of the Peninsula, looking out at him resting, while storms sent waves crashing against his body.

This piece was recorded in Dublin with the . Breaths and percussion were performed by Martin Schärer from the Di**le Peninsula. Mixed by in London and mastered by in Athens.

It is slow, simple, repetitive — music not for listening, but for passing by. Like the Giant himself, nothing happens, and yet he is always there.

In 2022–23, I lived with my family in Baile na nGall (“Town of the Foreigners”), or Ballydavid – just a few kilometres from Dún an Óir, a headland on the Di**le Peninsula overlooking Smerwick Harbour.

The site is tied to haunting moments in Irish history: the Siege of Smerwick in 1580, during the Second Desmond Rebellion. Hundreds of Spanish, Italian, and Basque troops who had landed in support of the Irish cause were surrounded and killed after surrendering.
That weight still lingers in the land – in the silence, in the wind off the Atlantic.

“Dún An Óir” is an instrumental piece that grew from this atmosphere – featuring harpsichord, string quartet, and Martin Schärer from Anascaul on percussion.

This release marks the beginning of a new series exploring Irish stories, places, and sounds – through music.
