Why?! π€
Beginner piano students should learn tonic (root position) chords before inversion chords because they provide the foundational understanding of chord structure β root, third, & fifth β in the simplest and most recognizable form.
Starting with tonic chords helps students:
πΉ Build confidence through consistent finger patterns
πͺ Develop muscle memory
π Train their ears to recognize stable, grounded harmonic sounds
These chords also support basic music theory πΌ & chord progressions π, making it easier for students to understand how music is constructed.
πΆ Inversions, which rearrange chord tones & create more complex harmonic textures, are best introduced later to enhance fluidity & voice leading β once the student has a solid grasp of root position chords.
