Beginner piano students should learn tonic (root position) chords before inversion chords because they provide the foundational understanding of chord structure — root, third, & fifth — in the simplest and most recognizable form.

Starting with tonic chords helps students:
🎹 Build confidence through consistent finger patterns
💪 Develop muscle memory
👂 Train their ears to recognize stable, grounded harmonic sounds

These chords also support basic music theory 🎼 & chord progressions 🔁, making it easier for students to understand how music is constructed.

🎶 Inversions, which rearrange chord tones & create more complex harmonic textures, are best introduced later to enhance fluidity & voice leading — once the student has a solid grasp of root position chords.
