Erratic weather ravages crops, fruit trade
May 17, 2026 | Times of India |

Unseasonal rain, strong winds, and hailstorms have caused severe agricultural losses in Bihar, damaging crops, mango orchards, and litchi production. The extreme weather affected key farming districts during critical growth and harvest periods, leading to widespread crop destruction.

Farmers describe the situation as a “triple blow” due to reduced yields, damaged fruit orchards, and falling market prices. Mango and litchi growers suffered particularly heavy losses after storms damaged blossoms and young fruits, sharply reducing expected harvests and orchard values.

The crisis has also affected harvested crops, with farmers struggling to protect stored produce from sudden storms. Overall, the combination of climate-related damage and declining market prices has placed significant financial pressure on farming communities across the region.

Agronometrics in Charts: Record Mexican shipments drop US avocado prices to $1 per pound
April 16, 2026 | Fresh Fruit Portal |

The US avocado market continues to grow in 2026, driven mainly by rising imports rather than domestic production. California output is expected to increase slightly, but imports dominate supply, reaching a record 2.87 billion pounds in 2025. Mexico remains the primary supplier, accounting for the vast majority of imports.

Early 2026 shipments from Mexico have increased significantly, with a higher proportion of larger fruit, contributing to falling prices. Additional seasonal imports from Peru and Colombia further boost supply, especially during peak periods.

While increased availability benefits consumers through lower prices, it intensifies competition for US producers, particularly in California, highlighting the market’s strong reliance on imports.
