🌍 Protecting our "Silent Infrastructure"! 2026 International Workshop: Soil Health and Multifunctionality – Integrating Science and Practice for a Sustainable Future 🌱
The rapid progression of global warming and extreme weather events is threatening our food production and water supply. In addressing these planetary-scale challenges, soil plays an irreplaceable and important role. Because the functions of soil are often hidden from view, silently buffering environmental threats such as droughts, floods, and pollution, it has long served as a "silent infrastructure" supporting ecosystems and human life.
However, recent increases in extreme weather events, resource over-extraction, and industrialization have significantly degraded the chemical, physical, and biological functions of soil, posing serious concerns for our future.
To improve soil health and sustain its functionality in the Asia-Pacific region, JIRCAS, NARO, and FFTC will co-organize the 2026 International Workshop in Tsukuba, Japan. This event will integrate perspectives from science, field practice, and policy to comprehensively explore the core functions of soil health and propose effective strategies for sustainable soil management and utilization.
