Ocre xMaasai, the artwork
This colorful necklace was made by Napokeki and the women of jewelry ⚡
Thanks to we were able to get in touch with the women from Msitu Wa Tembo in northern Tanzania. It wasn’t easy since contact was dependent on the weather during the rainy season and roads were often flooded. 💧
The design of the necklace is inspired by traditional Maasai jewelry. It is composed of 5 different colors: blue, green, white, black and orange. These colors are the main colors of Maasai beaded jewelry and each of these colors is said to have a significance in Maasai culture.
The designs are often geometrical, here a mix of triangle shapes and straight lines were used to make this necklace worn tightly around women’s necks. 🔆

The Maasai culture 🛖
The Maasai people in Kenya and Tanzania have developed a rich and colorful culture. Traditionally, Maasai were fearsome warriors whose way of life revolved around grazing their main food source: their cattle. They adopted a semi-nomadic lifestyle tuned with the rhythm of these graze lands. 🌱
But Maasai also developed a rich artistic tradition of draped clothing and intricate beaded jewelry.
For centuries, Maasai women and men have adorned themselves with jewelry, headdresses and clothing. Adornments were once made from the available natural resources: clay, wood, bone, copper and brass.
Since the late 19th century and the development of trade with Europeans, the Maasai have adopted glass beads to make necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry.
Today, the talents of Maasai jewelers have spread throughout the world. They use glass and plastic beads for their handicrafts. Jewelry has become an important source of income for Maasai communities. 💪
Maasai handicrafts are mainly sold to international tourists who visit the nature reserves of Kenya and Tanzania.
In Maasai culture, the most colorful and intricate jewelry often indicates an individual's high social status. Most delicate jewelry is worn for special occasions. Maasai women are responsible for making the jewelry and often work in groups to create these colorful and meaningful pieces.🔅
