Find a fabric that works for you.

Choose sheets, pillowcases and other bedding in fabrics that appeal most strongly to your sense of touch. Cotton sheets with a higher thread count are softer and silkier than those with lower thread counts, and they’re more durable, as well.

But don’t rely on thread count alone when you’re putting together the most comfortable bed. Linens are sold in a variety of textures. Soft flannel sheets and cotton knit sheets might fit your definition of “comfort” to a tee. Sateen sheets have a glossy appearance and are silky to the touch.

Think about a mattress topper.

Indulge yourself with a mattress topper. You can easily create a more comfortable bed with a memory foam mattress topper. They are available in 1- through 4-inch thicknesses. If you’re happy with your mattress just the way it is, consider adding a feather bed to take your bedtime comfort to the next level.

Choose a bedspread.

Pick a blanket or comforter that is both decorative and soft. For many, a comfortable bed demands the presence of a lofty down comforter, regardless of the season or climate. If you select a down comforter one size larger than your mattress, it can easily stand in lieu of a traditional bedspread.

Be generous with the pillows.

When you’re making the most comfortable bed, two pillows simply won’t do the trick. For most people, down pillows are essential. Select pillows with a high thread count to keep the down from escaping between the fabric’s weave. Alternately, memory foam pillows that conform to the shape of your head and neck are also very popular. Queen- and king-size pillows give you more length and width than standard-size pillows. Softer pillows are ideal for tummy-sleepers, while those who sleep on their backs or sides may prefer a firmer pillow.
