You hear them before you see them. A bark, a scream, the canopy moving, and then, four metres above your head, a chimpanzee drops through the branches and looks directly at you.

Kibale Forest in western Uganda holds the highest density of primates in Africa: 13 species, 1,500 chimpanzees, and a handful of habituated communities you can spend one hour with, six travellers at a time.

We share 98.7% of our DNA with them. In Kibale, the other 1.3% feels very thin.
