This is Rose, Joshua's mom (Joshua is one of the KICVOP sponsored children over the years). On her lap are some of the school requirements a child MUST have at every beginning of the semester/term (every three to four months). The list is really long and it poses a huge burden on parents and guardians.
Our school project aims at lessening this burden by minimising the list to only what the children need to enhance their learning environment. Join us on our cause to make education accessible and affordable.

Our Story

GAVA is a non-profit operating in Uganda and the Netherlands with supporters around the world.

Our name, GAVA, comes from a Luganda proverb “Gava mu kulya” which means the source of energy, power and wisdom is food. In this sense, we truly believe that food is the beginning of everything.

GAVA operates in Kazo, which is one of four slums in Kampala, Uganda. The majority of the Kazo community live below the poverty line and lack basic necessities. Yet these people are kind and giving, committed to supporting each other to become self-sufficient.

Since the start of GAVA in 2014, GAVA has provided meals for up to 150 people (over 20 families) in dire need via the nutrition program. The program significantly improves the overall welfare of these families and enables them to channel their limited resources to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves.

In 2015, we launched a second program through which we are providing training and support to entrepreneurs and have already established five small, yet successful businesses such as charcoal, fish and chips, and vegetable business.

In 2018 we will expand the new program to provide structured and scalable micro-investment support in Kazo and beyond.

Investing in local entrepreneurs increases our impact and truly changes the lives of those in need. With your support, we can help create a better future.
