Truth to meditate on in the Christmas season

GOOD NEWS OF GREAT JOY

"But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people. For to you is born this day in the town of David a Saviour, Who is Christ (the Messiah) the Lord!" Luke 2:10-11

Good news of a great joy!

This is what this book is about.
This must have been what Philip proclaimed. This must have been what caused an entire city to listen to him as one man. This must have been what caused faith to come into the hearts of the paralytics and lame people who were healed that day. This must have been the news that caused the city to rejoice.

But why was it good news of a great joy?

The angels singing in heaven on the night He was born explained to the world why.

"And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, Good will towards men."
Luke 2:13-14

The birth of the Saviour was a sign of God’s good will towards men. It was a sign that God was reconciling himself to mankind. It was a sign of God’s pleasure in men.

The Lamb of God who was slain before the foundation of the world(Revelation 13:8) for the sin of humanity had arrived on earth to finish the job.

1. He had arrived to do God’s will

Then I said, "Here I am- it is written about me in the scroll- I have come to do your will, O God". Hebrews 10:7

No longer would people have to be confused about what God’s will for their lives, for humanity was. They would just look at Jesus’ life on earth, listen to Him speak and then they would know what God’s will was.

2. He had arrived to reveal to the world who God really was

"He is the sole expression of the glory of God [the Light being, the out-raying or radiance of the divine], and He is the perfect imprint and very image of God’s nature, upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His mighty word of power. When He had by offering Himself accomplished our cleansing of sins and riddance of guilt. He sat down at the right hand of the divine Majesty on high," Hebrews 1:3

"For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead) continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature]." Colossians 2:9

No longer would people be given a wrong picture of God. No longer would they be confused about who God really was, what He was like, what His ability was, what His character was, what pleased Him or what displeased Him. In Jesus Christ the whole fullness of the Godhead had decided to express itself.

As men looked at Him, they would see God.

I pray for you. That you, too may see God in this season.

Becoming a man of distinction
cont'd from last week

What are you bowing to?

What you bow down to will determine whether you stand out as a man of distinction or not. It will also determine as we see in the last verse of chapter 3 of Daniel, who of those you live among you will bow down to. It will give you influence or take it away from you.

As we come closer to the end of the age, the question we shall have to deal with on an almost every day basis is; Who shall I serve?

I must warn you that the secular world is going to (as it already is), offer you many idols to serve and bow down to.
Daniel 3 gives a full account of how Daniel and his friends were offered an idol by the then secular system of Babylon.
You might be thinking at this point of idols only in terms of physical things like golden calves, trees, wooden idols, and other human works.

Idolatry is much more than that.
An idol is anything that takes the place of God in your life.
Does the pursuit of money cause you to forfeit your pursuit of the Kingdom of God and His righteousness? Do you love money more than you love God? Are you always uncomfortable with giving your money for Gods purposes? Would you compromise your God given values for the sake of earning an extra buck?
If the answer to the above questions is yes, money has become an idol in your life.
Have parents taken the place of God in your life? Has family taken Gods place? Would you rather spend time with your family than in the presence of God? Do you love your family so much that it has hindered you from serving God? If yes, family has become an idol in your life.
How about fame? Is your life driven by the desire to become famous rather than the desire to please God? Would you exchange your relationship with God for a place in the worlds halls of fame? Would you compromise your Christian stand so you can be famous? If yes, fame has become your idol.
Has s*x taken the place of God in your life? Could you have silently become a s*x addict? Pastor, are there any play boy magazines that you have tucked away far from your wife for your own private enjoyment? Are there things on your computer that you dont want anybody else to see? Do you feel like having s*x with everyone in a skirt that passes by you? Have you actually been sleeping around and regretting it in the morning? Husband, are you overly demanding of s*x from your wife even if she isnt in the right frame for it? Could you be ra**ng your wife? If yes, s*x has become your idol.
How about food?
How about sleep?
How about career?
How about your title?
How about ministry?
How about the devil himself?
The list goes on and on...
