Uganda is moving towards efficient use of electricity for cooking (eCooking), thanks to Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) for supporting the Government's effort, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) in the development of a National eCooking Strategy for Uganda.

The Strategy, being developed by Centre for Integrated Research and Community Development Uganda (CIRCODU) in consultation with various stakeholders, will facilitate a transition to modern and clean cooking with electricity in households, institutions and commercial businesses. It will trigger the demand for electricity and spur growth of the supply chain for efficient eCooking appliances in the country.

The Strategy will align the energy sector with International, Regional and national targets and frameworks, such as SDG 7, the African Union Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy and Action Plan 2022 to 2032, the Energy Policy for Uganda, the NDP III, the Energy Transition Plan and Uganda Vision 2040.

The eCooking Strategy will also feed into the Integrated National Clean Cooking Strategy that is under development.

The IMEU project aims at contributing to the development of sustainable and inclusive markets for appropriate energy efficient (EE) products and services for households, agribusinesses, commercial facilities, and social institutions in Uganda. The project ambition will be reached through promoting and catalyzing investments in efficient energy use in tea, maize, and oil seeds value chains and the built environment in prioritized cities of Kampala, Fort portal and Lira.
