HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Following is from an excerpt from a mother's eulogy but which is universal among all mothers:

In the Marines people used to amaze at how we carried our houses on our backs for endless miles. But all mothers nurture us inside their bodies for nine months before bringing us to life! They believe all their children should be poster babies adorning Pampers boxes. They feed and change us; pick us up crying and kiss our boo-boo’s; teach us manners and about kindness; lecture us never to lie only to tell us that our fledgling drawings are works of art; stay up all night holding us tightly when we feel sick or hear thunder; drive us to a myriad of events; attend countless PTA meetings; silently suffer as we selfishly subordinate them to second place when our here today-gone-tomorrow, teen-aged friends come around; cook our favorite meals when we’re feeling sad; are the loudest cheerleader over a sea of people when we distinguish ourselves during a sporting event or public ceremony; with unwavering pride, insist that we are in the top one percent of our peer group even if we really are average; and with breathless tears awaken in the middle of the night to iron clothes and perform household chores the first night that we’ve finally left the nest. Our mothers must all go to the same school.

Perhaps there’s truth to the saying that mothers perform God’s work on Earth . . .

You're last to bed and first to awaken.

You let your children take food off your plate only to eat their leftovers.

You get them what they crave yet you never tell them what you really want.

You run a distant second to your family.

You die a slow death every time your child blurts, "I hate you!"

You feel resurrected when they plead in forgiveness, "I love you."

You struggle to raise your son to become a man while trying to demonstrate that true strength lies in compassion, kindness, and affection.

You struggle harder to savor your daughter's sublime sweetness while reluctantly accepting that your little girl is becoming a woman.

You try to set the example and show strength and certainty, only to hate yourself when you fall short, vowing to try harder.

​You don't expect "thank you's," praise, sometimes even respect. None of that falls within the job description.

You eventually learn that although you may not always be the father you envisioned, to forgive yourself.

You realize your number one priority is to protect your family. ​If it comes down to it, you will not hesitate one second to sacrifice your life for them.

Why? Because you're a man, not just a man but a father. Being a father tempers your youthful arrogance and aggressiveness. Being a father is humbling. Being a father gentles your condition. Being a father is the toughest job you will ever love!

So pat yourself on the back, Dad. Happy Father's Day!
