Spring tornado season is loading for Oklahoma 🌪️
This composite looks at past years with a similar ENSO transition pattern to the one we’re in now. When we shift phases like this, the southern Plains, especially western and central Oklahoma, often end up right in the sweet spot for repeated severe weather setups.
Climatology does not guarantee anything storm by storm, but it does tilt the playing field. During transition years, we typically see an active southern jet, frequent troughs ejecting into the Plains, and plenty of Gulf moisture returning north. That combination is what fuels higher tornado density across our region in the spring months.
For Oklahoma, that means
Multiple rounds of severe potential instead of just one big day
Higher tornado frequency compared to neutral years
Increased risk stretching from western Oklahoma into central parts of the state
It is not about hype. It is about pattern recognition. If this transition behaves like past analog years, we will need to stay weather aware through April and May.
Now is the time to review your severe weather plan before we are in the middle of it.
