The Texas Tribal Buffalo Project has received a federal grant to launch the first Indigenous-led, land-based workforce development program in Texas. Rooted in Buffalo restoration, regenerative agriculture, and traditional food systems, the program will help Native youth and adults gain culturally grounded skills while strengthening connections to land, community, and economic opportunity.

On this day in 1912, Jim Thorpe (Sac and Fox Nation) won Olympic gold in the pentathlon at the Stockholm Games, becoming the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States. 🏅

Competing as a student at the Carlisle Indian School, Thorpe dominated the field and helped redefine what was possible in athletics. His achievements inspired generations of Indigenous athletes and cemented his place among the greatest competitors in Olympic history.

Although his medals were unfairly stripped years later, they were reinstated in 1982. In 2022, the International Olympic Committee officially recognized Thorpe as the sole gold medalist in both the pentathlon and decathlon, fully restoring the legacy he earned. 🏆

When Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte saw the health challenges facing her people, she dedicated her life to making a difference. Her commitment to caring for Native communities helped pave the way for future generations.
