Thanks for sharing this info Chenango Sheriff
E-Bikes and Pedestrian Safety
As more residents and visitors enjoy e-bikes throughout Chenango County, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone that safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re driving, riding, or walking, following the rules of the road helps protect everyone in our community.
E-bike riders must obey all traffic laws, including stopping at stop signs and traffic signals, riding in the same direction as traffic, and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks. E-bikes are prohibited on sidewalks in New York State. Sidewalks are intended for pedestrians, and riding an e-bike on a sidewalk creates unnecessary risks for those who are walking.
Motorists should remember that e-bike rides have the same rights and responsibilities as other cyclists on many New York roadways. Be alert, check mirrors and blind spots before turning or opening a vehicle door, and provide adequate space when passing.
Pedestrians can help improve safety by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially when walking at dawn, dusk, or after dark. Carrying a flashlight at night and using marked crosswalks whenever possible can increase your visibility. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic so you can see approaching vehicles. Remain alert and avoid distractions while crossing streets. Making eye contact with approaching drivers and cyclists helps ensure that you have been seen before entering the roadway.
In New York State, you must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-bike. Parents and guardians should ensure your riders understand that e-bikes are not toys – they are subject to state traffic laws and require responsible operation. Riders must obey traffic signals, stay off sidewalks, yield to pedestrians, and always wear a properly fitted helmet. While helmets are required for certain riders by law, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office encourages all e-bike riders to wear one every ride.
As the number of e-bikes on our roads continue to grow, courtesy, patience, and awareness are more important than ever. By following the law, sharing the road, and respecting one another, we can help prevent serious incidents from occurring and keep Chenango County safe.
