Beware of the following IT security attacks

Smishing (SMS phishing) and vishing (voice phishing) are increasingly being used against IT service desk administrators as attackers recognize their access to critical systems and sensitive information. Here’s a brief overview:

1. Smishing: Attackers send deceptive text messages that appear to be from trusted sources, like supervisors or vendors, urging IT administrators to click on malicious links or share sensitive information. These links often lead to credential theft or malware installation.

2. Vishing: Attackers use phone calls, impersonating higher-ups or trusted partners, to manipulate administrators into divulging credentials, resetting passwords, or executing unauthorized actions on their systems. They often use urgent language or threats to create a sense of urgency.

To defend against these attacks, IT service desk administrators should be trained to verify the authenticity of requests, avoid sharing credentials or sensitive information over text or phone, and follow established security protocols for communication. Implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA) and regularly updating security awareness training are also essential preventive measures.
