As the country commemorates America250, the America Gives initiative encourages volunteerism and calls on citizens to step up and help. Here in New York, the NYS Library is partnering with The Great Give Back to be a part of America Gives. All participants and programs will be tracked on The Great Give Back website, and the final numbers will be sent to America Gives, showing the power of public libraries to create resilient communities.

America celebrates its 250th birthday this year, and the NYS Library isn’t far behind. We’ve been building our collections since right after the Revolution, and the items in our care tell countless stories about New York and American history.
Explore the American Revolution exactly as it was written—through the letters, maps, and speeches of New York’s revolutionaries. We’re doing extensive digitization work to ensure that all New Yorkers can connect to this important history!
The document pictured here, from The Orderly Book of the Northern Campaign, 1776-1779, describes the surrender terms between Gates and Burgoyne following the Battle of Saratoga.

Color our collections!
The NYS Library is home to a wealth of primary documents and artifacts from the American Revolution. As part of our efforts to support local libraries and communities in their own 250th observations, we selected some of our favorite items from the Library’s collections and made them into coloring sheets.
The illustration on this coloring page comes from a book about British military costumes gifted to George Washington in the 1780s.
