Today, France celebrates July 14 — known in France as le 14 juillet or la fête nationale, and commonly known in the United States as Bastille Day.
The words most often connected with the French Republic are:
Liberté.
Égalité.
Fraternité.
Freedom.
Equality.
Brotherhood.
These words are more than a motto. They carry history, struggle, identity, and aspiration.
They remind us that language can hold powerful ideas. It can give shape to what people value. It can help communities remember where they have been and imagine what they want to become.
For language learners, this is one reason culture matters.
When we learn French or Spanish, we are not only learning vocabulary. We are entering a world of meaning, memory, expression, and human connection.

On the eve of France’s national holiday, la Fête nationale, we pause to think about the meaning behind the celebration.
Coming just after the United States’ 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and just before France’s national holiday, this moment invites us to reflect on how ideas of freedom, voice, and participation travel across borders.
National holidays often include music, gatherings, fireworks, and public traditions.
But beneath those visible celebrations are deeper questions.
What did people hope for?
What were they trying to express?
What did they want to change?
What did they want others to hear?
As we reflect on July 14 and the language of freedom, we are reminded that history is not only about what happened.
It is also about what people were trying to say.
A desire to be heard.
A desire to participate.
A desire for dignity.
A desire for a voice.
These are deeply human themes.
They are also deeply connected to language learning.
Because when we learn another language, we are not simply learning words. We are learning how to participate more fully in conversations, cultures, and human connection.
Read our July blog and continue reflecting with us on the power of words, voice, and meaningful communication.
