Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and first celebrated on June 5, 1973, World Environment Day seeks to raise awareness, inspire change, and drive global action for a healthier, more sustainable planet.

In New Mexico, the Rio Grande faces constant threats from overallocation, climate change, and drought. Along the length of the Rio, communities rely on the river and its tributaries as an important cultural resource and for drinking water, agriculture, recreation, habitat for wildlife, and serves as the critical backbone of local economies.

We all owe a debt of gratitude for the dozens of organizations in New Mexico that have long advocated for and worked to protect and maintain the state’s exceptional beauty and critical resources.

The annual spring Heritage Day Festival at Casa San Ysidro convenes local experts to showcase traditional Southwest heritage arts, including wool spinning and weaving, traditional blacksmithing, tinwork, silver filigree, and retablo painting.

This free, family-friendly event honors New Mexico’s Puebloan, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo cultural roots with live music, dancing, artisan demonstrations, and tours of the Gutierrez Minge House.

This year did not disappoint!

Mark your calendars for the annual Harvest Festival on September 26 and 27.
