Our story
Originally, this land was home to and stewarded by the Pueblo peoples. It was purchased in 1999 by Bernalillo County and the Bachechi property is now a 27 acre wildlife and wetland management area. We are a low energy, low waste facility. Bachechi is owned and operated by the Bernalillo County Open Space Division. It is located at 9521 Rio Grande Blvd. NW, just south and east of the adjacent 8-acre Alameda Open Space that is owned and operated by the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division.
It contains remnants of the Bachechi family farm in its preservation of the well pump and some of the rose bushes that were grown at the time. And there is a walking trail arboretum in the NE quadrant that offers a shady spot to sit and take in a variety of flora and fauna habitat.
The trails were designed to provide viewing opportunity of a variety of habitat for diverse wildlife experience and thus it is important our guests adhere to the trail system that is on site to give the wildlife some space to raise their young and to feel secure living here. Social trails that people cut out of curiosity, veer too close to dens and nests and leave the landscape looking cut up and trampled upon. These are important considerations- as we are not a typical urban park! The land here is full-time home to many wild species! When recreating here, please keep this in mind and help model a leave-no-trace ethic.
Dogs: must remain on leash to preserve public and wildlife safety, and so all pet owners are better able to know where their dog has eliminated waste to aid them in its pickup.
