Think about it…
🪑Sit for 6+ hours.
Many adults struggle to sit through a two-hour meeting without standing up, stretching, grabbing water, or taking a break. Yet we expect children, whose bodies are still developing, to remain seated for most of the school day.
🙋🏽Ask permission to use the bathroom.
Sometimes a child needs the bathroom. Sometimes they need a drink of water. Sometimes they need a moment to move, reset, and regulate. Either way, they’re being asked to ignore what their body is telling them until someone else says yes.
🕚Eat lunch in 20 minutes.
Children are expected to eat, socialize, transition, and prepare for the rest of their day in a very short amount of time. When every minute is scheduled, there are few opportunities to slow down and respond to what their bodies actually need.
🚫Be told when you can talk.
Adults collaborate, process ideas out loud, and build relationships through conversation. Children learn this way too. Yet much of the school day is spent asking them to suppress one of the most natural ways humans learn and connect.
🚫Be told when you can move.
Movement isn’t a distraction from learning. For many children, movement is what makes learning possible. When movement becomes something students have to earn, we ignore what their bodies may need in order to focus.
📋Constant evaluation.
Imagine spending your day knowing that nearly everything you do could be measured, corrected, or compared. For students who learn through movement, the consequences can be even greater. The child who can’t sit still is often seen as a behavior problem long before anyone asks what their body might need.
Children aren’t just minds. They’re bodies, too.
And bodies need movement.
