“Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10)

This scripture is inscribed on the Liberty Bell that began as the State House bell in Philadelphia, calling lawmakers to meetings and citizens to important public news in the days of America’s founding.

Over time, this bell became much more than a civic instrument. Its powerful message of liberty inspired generations of Americans from the patriots of the Revolution to abolitionists, civil rights leaders, and liberty-minded people everywhere.

Though now silent, the Liberty Bell still speaks. Its famous crack has become part of its story, reminding us that liberty is precious, costly, and worth preserving.

As we celebrate America, the Liberty Bell reminds us of the enduring call to cherish freedom and pass it on to the next generation.

250 years ago today, a Virginia delegate named Richard Henry Lee stood before the Second Continental Congress and put independence into words.

On June 7, 1776, Lee introduced a resolution declaring that the colonies were “free and independent States.”

Congress waited to vote on the Lee Resolution until July 2.
