The effects of climate change continue to be experienced by the world – from climate extremes to harms to human health. In public health and emergency management, organizations across all levels of government are addressing climate change and implementing actions to reduce the harms and impacts of climate change. However, we need transformational change across all sectors to truly create a new plan of action for our planet.

For Earth Day 2023, the world is being called to “act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably)” and to celebrate Earth Day every day. Learn more below about what you and your organization can do to invest in our planet today and every day at https://www.earthday.org/.

Last month, FEMA released its first National Tribal Strategy. The Strategy addresses its responsibilities to federally recognized tribes by identifying critical agency activities in support of Tribal Nations. The Strategy was developed to be consistent with the broader 2022-2026 FEMA Strategic Plan by outlining tribal specific activities and intended outcomes in alignment with the Strategic Plan’s 3 goals.

Last month, FEMA partnered with AARP and released the Guide to Expanding Mitigation: Making the Connection to Older Adults (https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/documents/fema_mitigation-guide_older-adults.pdf).

With U.S. population statistics projecting that individuals ages 65 and older will outnumber those under age 18 by 2034, the guide provides ways that emergency managers can strengthen community resilience in consideration of older adults. The guide also provides some historical examples of how older adults have been disproportionately impacted by notable disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina, Sandy, and Florence, COVID-19, and the 2018 Camp Fire.

Take a look at the guide and accompanying toolkit here. How does your community include older adults in efforts to reduce risk through hazard mitigation?

August marks National Immunization Awareness Month, providing an opportunity for public health and healthcare professionals to reach parents and patients and reinforce the importance of vaccines, including those that are routine and those that protect against preventable diseases.

The CDC has available resources oriented toward different messenger and audience types, including toolkits, a featured video series, and a vaccine assessment tool. They can be used as a baseline as you tailor your National Immunization Awareness Month communications campaign to your community.

How are you planning to reinforce immunization this month to your patients or constituents?

On Tuesday, www.heat.gov was launched to provide more heat and health information across the nation, with the goal of reducing disproportionate extreme heat mortality rates through the provision of timely and science-based information.

Tools and information that can conveniently be found in one place include an extreme heat vulnerability mapping tool, a health and heat tracker, FEMA's National Risk Index, the U.S. Hazards Outlook, and more. The webpage also features resources for planners - from public health officials to emergency responders to employers.

As extreme heat continues to impact millions of Americans across the country on a daily basis, including a current heat wave in the Pacific Northwest, the site marks an investment between several federal government partners to focus on societal heat resilience.
