Happy 80th to the grand matriarch of our large family! When we first arrived in the US, Bà Hai walked my mom into a supermarket and persuaded the manager to give her an interview. She was (and still is) considered a great beauty, so not many recognized her fierce determination and resourcefulness. She raised 4 children on her own during the war, immigrated to the US on her own, and is a force to be reckoned with. 💜

I also had the great fortune to meet the mother chef of whose food I’ve long admired. If you’re ever in Downtown LA or Orange County, consider checking them out. Their plant-based food will blow your mind. Growing up in Vietnam, I am used to eating vegetarian food on new moon and full moon, as well as special occasions. Vegetarian food is its own cuisine, not merely cooking with meat-substitutes.
