I Corinthians 15:55-57
[55] “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” [56] The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. [57] But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul uses poetic language to mock death. By asking where its "sting" is, he implies that death has been defanged. It no longer has the final word or the power to destroy the soul.
Paul explains that death’s "sting"—the thing that makes it truly terminal and terrifying—is sin. He notes that the law gives sin its power by defining right and wrong, showing us where we fall short.
Verse 57 shifts from the problem to the solution. The victory isn't something humans achieve through effort or following the law perfectly; it is a gift from God.

Ephesians 2:8-9
[8] For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— [9] not by works, so that no one can boast.
By making salvation a gift rather than a reward, it removes human pride. If we could earn our way to heaven, we’d have a reason to brag. Since it's a gift, the credit goes entirely to God.
