Mr. Nyron Brown was recently selected as the Teacher of the Year for Sumter County Intermediate School (SCIS). The staff revealed the selection and presented him with videos featuring congratulatory messages and accolades from friends, family, former students, and fellow staff members.

Mr. Brown currently teaches sixth-grade mathematics. He has been an educator for twenty-three years, with four of those years spent at SCIS. He recently explained that his initial desire to become a teacher stemmed from his admiration for his history and business education teachers. During high school, he was often asked to explain concepts to his peers, and his passion for teaching was further reinforced by educators within his family.

He explained that the most challenging part of teaching is effectively balancing curriculum goals and expectations within specific time frames while addressing the various personalities and interests within the classroom so that all students can achieve success and learn mathematics independently.

Mr. Brown shared that the most rewarding part of teaching is seeing former students successfully complete tertiary or vocational training and hearing how their lives were impacted as a result of his teaching.

When asked how he felt about being selected as Teacher of the Year, Mr. Brown replied that it is “truly an honor with infinite emotions.” He further explained, “I have nothing but heartfelt gratitude and respect. The limitless thoughts of what transpired can be narrowed down to simple appreciation and respect from my colleagues. It shows a level of admiration beyond hallways and classrooms that one’s efforts are recognized.”
