The federal and state government are pushing for people to abandon their current gas water heaters and with the help of rebate incentives are encouraging the installation of electric Heat Pump Water Heaters. Theoretically if you have a solar system generating power for your house, you could have free hot water. It's recommended that you upgrade 2 capacity sizes from what your currently have as heat pumps are much slower at producing hot water. There are 240V and 110V heat pumps. 110V heat pumps do not have the electric elements to back up the slow producing heat pumps, so 240V units work much faster. Heat Pump compressors do make noise, so if it's located inside the house, take this into consideration. Adequate air surrounding the heat pump is also necessary. If located inside a closet, it may be necessary to provide ducting to provide adequate air to make hot water. Something to consider.

California public utilities report outages for a variety of problems. Luckily, we have natural gas as a fuel for our water heaters, stoves, ovens and FAU's. I don't see many using electric tankless water heaters as they are much less efficient, but in areas of the country gas is not available this might be a solution. Imagine everyone on the block getting an electric car??
