Appeal of permit denial submitted by Pebble Partnership and the State of Alaska - Pebble Watch 01/23/2021

The Pacific Ocean Division of the Corps of Engineers confirmed that it received requests to appeal the Pebble mine permit denial this week from both the Pebble Limited Partnership and the State of Alaska. It's the first time the state has appealed such a decision.

Cook Inlet beluga whales are one of several marine mammals in a protected status under the Endangered Species Act, and they could be impacted by the proposed Pebble mine. NOAA Fisheries is currently developing a Biological Opinion on these marine mammals as part of formal consultation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Learn more in our fact sheet.
