Today, June 3, is Dutch Harbor Remembrance Day.

On this day in 1942, Japanese aircraft bombed the military base at Dutch Harbor, marking the beginning of World War II in Alaska. Additional attacks followed across the Aleutian islands of Adak, Kiska, Attu, and Atka.

As a result, the United States government forcibly removed nearly 900 Unangax̂ residents from their homes in the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands and relocated them to camps in Southeast Alaska for the remainder of the war. Many of whom did not survive or return home.

Today, we pause to honor the lives lost of the servicemen and women who defended our homelands, and the resilience of the Unangax̂ people who endured profound loss, displacement, and unimaginable hardship during this time. 💙
