Staying at the Iroquois Hotel in true history teacher form… and it was an added bonus to see the Algonquin Hotel just a stone’s throw away. The Iroquois and Algonquin tribes were separated by the Great Lakes (or, in this case, by the City Club Hotel). The tribes were bitter enemies that made war on each other continually. European colonizers took sides in these conflicts, with the French allying themselves with the Algonquins and the English with the Iroquois. The Iroquois were not a single tribe, but a confederation of five (later six) tribes in present-day New York state, including the Mohawk, Seneca, and Oneida tribes. The bonds between the French and their Indian allies proved to be much stronger, as the Iroquois sat out of the Seven Years’ War, for the most part, while the French received the enthusiastic support from most of their native allies (thus the British designation of the North American theater as the French and Indian War). Algonquin tribes were not confined to Canada, but could also be found on the Atlantic coast. The Powhatan tribe, which the English settlers at Jamestown encountered, was an Algonquin-speaking tribe in present-day Virginia.

After asking a student who started playing the song on their phone in my classroom to turn it off, it got stuck in my head to the point where I began concocting alternative lyrics featuring my two favorite European kings: Louis XIV and Peter the Great. This parody song is the result:
