The herbal community has lost a friend, a talented herbalist, and an inspired botanical photographer. This past weekend, best-selling author Steven Foster passed away at his home in Arkansas.
Steven began his herbal career at the nation’s oldest herb business (established in 1799), the Shaker’s Herb Department in Sabbathday Lake, Maine. In his 40 years serving the herbal community, he was a renowned lecturer and educator on a wide range of herb-related subjects, as well as being the author of 19 books, including some of the finest field guides to medicinal plants and herbs.
Remarkably, as a botanist, he was almost entirely self-taught and knew as much about botany and the history of the literature on herbal medicine as many of the finest academics. But it was his botanical photos for which most people knew him. His thousands of beautiful images have graced the pages of countless books and magazines, the Mountain Rose Herbs Journal included.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Steven’s family and to his friends in the herbal community. Thank you, Steven, for your tireless work and the knowledge you so generously shared with us all.
How is everybody doing? How are you coping with our current situation?
Life is normal here with the exception of holding classes and traveling to teach. I'm gardening, planting, harvesting, making herbal medicine. I haven't been off the farm in at least a month. (Like I said, life is normal). I hope you all are finding joy in nature and in the slowing down. Be gentle with yourself. Know you are loved. Stay safe. Be well. And stay the hell at home. Much love and many blessings, Robin
