For , we’re highlighting photographer Alice Austen (1866–1952)!

An avid sportsperson, Austen documented her interests in tennis, bicycling, swimming, boating, and golf through her photography. In 1895, she and her friend Maria E. Ward (“Violet”) founded the Staten Island Bicycle Club. The following year, Ward published "Bicycling for Women," featuring illustrations based on a series of Austen’s photographs.

In 2008, NEDCC conserved photographs from Austen’s collection at Historic Richmond Town, including the reference image used to illustrate coasting.
