A LOOK AT THE JANUARY ARTIC BLAST

As mentioned yesterday, while there are some important questions surrounding the Arctic blast in January [such as how cold temperatures get, where the axis of the coldest temperatures will reside, the precise timing and if wintry precipitation will accompany the Arctic blast], confidence is high in very cold, Arctic air blasting into areas east of the Rockies just after the first week of January. While these aforementioned questions remain, looking at the model trends is critical in such a setup this far out. So what is the latest model trend? The model trend has been much colder and backing the colder temperatures farther west to just east of the lee side of the Rockies [so pretty much all areas east of the Rockies will be cold while areas west are 'warm']. The graphic below shows the ensemble mean temperature departure from normal for Saturday, January 11 [blue, green and purple colors are temperatures below normal and the orange and red colors depict temperatures above normal]. Keep checking back as I fine tune the forecast!
