It's Primary Election Day! Make your voice heard until 8pm tonight! If you are in , I would be honored to earn your vote. And yes, it was a little surreal to vote for myself for Iowa Senate instead of the House!

Today I turn 50! 🎉

I have birthday thoughts...

For as long as I can remember, it’s been a big point of pride to be called a Bicentennial Baby. My parents even doubled-down on this, getting me baptized on the 4th of July. There was something extra special about being born in 1976 in the midst of celebrating America at 200.

I think it’s part of the reason why I have always found myself talking about the value of the common good and the deeply moving language of “we are our brother’s keeper; we are our sister’s keeper”. It’s probably why I always tear up when I hear or read the final passage of the Declaration of Independence: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” (Seriously, it happened this morning.)

Turning 50 has me thinking a lot about America at 250.

Life is hard for a lot of people right now. In some ways, we feel upside-down.

In truth, that has always been our history at various points in time. We were founded in the paradoxical beauty and heartbreak of compromise. But we have made big advances over 250 years, certainly not without stumbles or deep hurt, but proud progress toward a more perfect union nonetheless.

Change always comes — sometimes it’s slower than we want and slower than what is needed. But as I consider America at 250, I firmly believe in our commitment to, and our love for, each other, our state, and our nation.

In running for the Iowa Senate, I am doubling-down on the power of building community and the inherent value of each of our neighbors by working to make Iowa the most welcoming state and the best place to live, work, and raise a family. That’s my America at 250.

Today I am asking you to consider how you will be a part of America at 250 and take action. What local nonprofit needs your help with a donation or a volunteer shift? What summer lunch program needs a few more volunteers? What senior living facility could use more activities for their residents? What local small business could use your support now more than ever?

There is no shortage of ways we can and do show up for our neighbors. What’s next for you? If you are so inclined, please send me a message or comment below with what you choose as I’d love to gather those actions together in celebration.

And of course, if it feels right, I’d be honored if you’d consider donating to my Senate campaign for my birthday and as part of your America at 250 commitment to building community.
