"Should I just filter my whole house?"

We get asked this all the time, so here's our honest take.

Most whole-home systems, the softeners and carbon tanks, do not remove nitrate, which happens to be the big one here in Iowa, so you can spend thousands of dollars and still have the same nitrate levels as your neighbors' garden hose. You also don't need drinking-water-grade purity for your showers, your laundry, or the lawn.

Reverse osmosis is what actually pulls nitrate out, and it makes the most sense right where you drink and cook, at the sink, for a fraction of the cost of a whole-home filtration system.
