Taking an extra 60 seconds to look up an unfamiliar abbreviation does three major things for you:

1️⃣ Deepens your understanding of the actual disease state presentation.
2️⃣ Cleans up your sub-notes, keeping your documentation precise and accurate.
3️⃣ Saves your presentation when your preceptor asks you to explain the clinical rationale.

Don’t just pass off shorthand to get the workup done faster. Accuracy always beats speed.

💬 Students & Interns: What’s one abbreviation that tripped you up when you first started hospital rotations?

Over the past 10 years of precepting pharmacy students, I’ve written well over 1,200 rotation evaluations.

The interesting part?

The same themes show up again and again.

Students often think they’re being graded on how much they know, but that’s only part of it.

What preceptors remember is how you think, how you respond to feedback, whether you’re dependable, and whether they can trust your work.
