Total backyard transformation!
Hey there! Did you hear about Punxsutawney Phil's prediction for an early spring this year? Although he's only been right 30% of the time, I've got a good feeling about it this year, especially with our global warming trend.
By the way, if we do get an early spring in the Piedmont, I recommend pruning your Smooth and Panicle Hydrangeas in late February or March. These beautiful shrubs flower on new wood (current year growth) and require pruning only to maintain a pleasing shape.
For established hydrangeas, you can cut off 30%-50% of the old growth up to the next bud, while for newly planted ones, you only need to cut off the spent flowers up to the next bud.
Smooth hydrangeas are stunning with their giant pearly white blooms and large heart-shaped dark green leaves. And did you know that they often start light green and change to a soft white as they mature? Some popular smooth hydrangea varieties include Incrediball, Invincibelle, and Lime Ricky.
Panicle hydrangeas (also known as Peegee) are easy to spot with their large conical flowers that turn pink depending on the variety. Their toothed, linear-shaped leaves are medium matte green. Some common panicle hydrangea varieties include Little Lime, Bobo, Limelight, Little Quick Fire, and Fire Light.
Hope you found this helpful!
