Hi, I'm Nate. My wife, Sarah, and I are both registered Nurses (RN). We both enjoy helping people and decided to start our own businesses doing just that.

Spend a moment today to remember those who gave their lives defending our freedoms, pray for those who are serving in the military and thank a veteran. If you know a Hmong veteran who fought along side our American soldiers in the Vietnam war, be sure to shake his hand and thank him for his service too.

What is a lipid? That's just medical jargon for cholesterol and fat. Maybe you have been cautioned before to avoid eating unhealthy foods that are high in cholesterol. Maybe you have also been told that Cholesterol can lead to heart disease. But have you ever heard that it is possible to NOT have enough cholesterol in your body? This is called hypolipidemia (as apposed to hyperlipidemia). Hypolipidemia is associated with malnutrition. Like anything else in our bodies, lipids have to be in the right balance for us to be at our best health. Lipids are needed for energy storage, insulation, protection and absorption of certain vitamins. Unfortunately, lipids can also make food taste really good which means it can be easy for us to eat too much of it. What happens when our lipid levels are too high? They clog your blood vessels which is bad because every area of your body needs to be nourished with all the wonderful things that your blood carries. Typically heart health is mentioned when lipids are talked about because a starving heart muscle can mean death, but it is also important to remember that every part of your body needs clear blood vessels and good blood flow. blocked up blood vessels can affect everything from the discs in your back to your hormone secreting glands.
Thankfully there are many diets to choose from that can help us to consistently limit how many lipid rich foods we indulge in. Find one that suits you best and then stick with it. Maybe exploring myplate.com could be a good first step for you? A word of advice though, don't set yourself up for frustration and failure; don't just restrict and remove foods from your diet. Be sure to add a good variety of foods too! This may mean experimenting with new recipes and new flavors.
Lastly, be sure to move more. Remember how I mentioned that lipids are involved in energy storage? Use up some of your lipid/energy stores by doing something active that you enjoy. Remember, even table tennis involves more movement than t.v. watching. Good luck on your "lipid journey"!
