Atlas Science Center to Close, Partnerships Secured for Continued Mission
It is with a heavy heart that Atlas Science Center announces its permanent closure due to rising operational costs. After careful deliberation, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to sell the property, formerly a paper mill on the Fox River.Atlas Science Center, originally known as the Paper Discovery Center, has proudly served the Fox River Valley community since 2005, promoting life-long learning, discovery, and scientific exploration. In a move to ensure the continuation of its mission and responsible stewardship of resources, Atlas Science Center has entered into a partnership with the Building for Kids Children’s Museum and other community organizations. These collaborations aim to preserve and transfer the Center’s assets to be re-deployed in our community, facilitating the ongoing pursuit of scientific education and community enrichment.
Carol Couillard, Executive Director of Atlas Science Center, shared her gratitude: “For many years, Atlas Science Center has been a beacon of learning and inspiration in our community. We are deeply thankful to all the volunteers, supporters, and champions who have been with us on this journey.” Lance Alft, Board Chair, Atlas Science Center stated, “ Several years ago, we embarked on a journey to rebrand, revitalize our board of directors and redefine our strategic vision. Despite the overwhelmingly positive responses from our community and stakeholders, these efforts were not enough to secure the financial foundation necessary for us to continue forward. We take pride in the impact we've made and hope the spirit of science and learning we fostered will continue to inspire others in new ways.”
More details about legacy projects and the future of Atlas Science Center’s mission will be shared in the coming months as plans develop.
