There is a version of parenting where you protect your children from hard things.

And then there is the version where you prepare them for hard things.

The second one is harder to do. It requires you to say things that are uncomfortable to say out loud. Things that do not wrap up neatly. Things that your child might push back on.

But the parents who were honest with their kids, gently and repeatedly, about how the world actually works, tend to raise adults who are not shattered by it.

No one owes your child anything. That is not a cynical thing to teach. It is a freeing thing. Because once they know that, they stop waiting and they start moving.

Effort beats talent when talent is lazy. This one lands differently as they get older. Most of them will not be the most naturally gifted person in the room. But most of them can be the most willing.

Failure teaches more than success. You do not have to make failure comfortable, but you do have to help them sit in it without collapsing. The muscle gets built there.

Discipline is freedom in disguise. This is the hardest sell to a teenager and the most obvious thing to a 40-year-old. Keep saying it anyway.

Popularity fades. Character lasts. Say this especially during the years when popularity feels like everything.

Gratitude makes even hard days easier. Not as a performance. As a practice. Something you model before you suggest it.

You cannot teach all of these at once. You do not have to. You just have to keep showing up and saying them.

In the car. At dinner. When things go wrong.

Your voice becomes the voice they use on themselves.

Make it a kind one. And an honest one.

Both at the same time.
