Retro gaming is back — and it's bringing new players with it.
This National Video Game Day, new Consumer Technology Association research shows nearly half of households planning to buy a retro or classic console this year would be first-time owners, up 15 percentage points from 2025.
Gaming is also holding strong overall: 55% of U.S. households own at least one console, and home video game consoles rank fifth in installed unit base across all consumer tech products tracked. The full data is in our 2026 U.S. Consumer Technology Ownership & Market Potential Study. https://www.cta.tech/research/2026-us-consumer-technology-ownership-market-potential-study/
