Sorry to those who watched my live stream of the fireworks. This is the first time we got smoked out at our location (it happened to me at another place I lived back in the 90s), and we lost visibility after a few minutes. It looked good at the start, but the weather kept the smoke low, and the wind pushed it to the south and our vantage point. It was a much better view on the north side. Here are the 40 minutes sped up to show what happened. We had fun anyway, but I felt for the tens of thousands on the ground, who waited for hours with family and friends.

Tomorrow marks 40 years since the death of Len Bias – a tragedy that stunned the sports world and the legion of fans who followed the young basketball star. It was, without a doubt, one of the most heartbreaking and troubling days in local sports history.
As a reporter, you accept that your work will occasionally make people angry. But on June 19, 1986, less than a year into my TV news career, I seemed to p**s off an entire region by reporting the truth.
