Have you ever shared that you are disabled or living with a chronic condition and heard one of these responses?
These comments are often intended as reassurance, encouragement, or curiosity, but they can feel invalidating when they minimize or question lived experience.
When someone says, “You don’t look disabled” or “You seem fine to me,” it often reflects assumptions about what disability is supposed to look like.
When you hear these comments, you might:
🎈 Feel like you have to prove your disability or justify your needs.
🎈 Feel dismissed or unseen in your experience.
🎈 Question whether your symptoms are “serious enough.”
🎈 Feel pressure to hide or downplay your struggles.
🎈 Experience frustration at being misunderstood.
The reality is that disability is not always visible, and it does not follow a single pattern.
🎈 You can be disabled and look “fine” to others.
🎈 You can be disabled and work or study.
🎈 You can be disabled and have good days and bad days.
🎈 You can be disabled and still need accommodations, rest, or support.
🎈 You can be disabled without your experience being constantly visible to others.
🎈 You do not need to look “sick enough” to deserve support.
🎈 You do not need to justify your needs or limitations.
🎈 You do not need to prove the validity of your experience.
At Blue Sky Learning, our neurodiversity-affirming therapists and coaches support disabled and neurodivergent individuals in unlearning internalized ableism, understanding their needs, and building sustainable, supportive ways of living.
