Is Traditional SEO Dead? What Small Businesses Need to Know in the Age of AI
We all know that AI keeps changing almost everything. Since, you may have heard that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) has changed or even that it is dead. Well, like most honest answers the truth is somewhere in the middle. I just want to keep you in the know of what is going on today with online searches / questions.
SEO was a way to design your website content focused on keywords. So, say you are a plumber you would be optimizing for: Plumber, plumbing, unclogging drains (key words could also be phrases), French drains and so on. Then you would need to try to dominate your local service area, so Plumbers in 44004, Plumbers in Ashtabula, Ohio and so on.
That worked then because people were using Google Search like they were looking something up in the Yellow Pages of their phonebook; if you remember what those were. The websites that had those keywords, and some organic traffic - people searching directly for your exact business because of word-of-mouth or local advertising and had other links into their website – like from the Chamber of Commerce or plumbing associations were going to rank much higher in the SERP – Search Engine Results Page.
Now, don't get me wrong—traditional searching hasn't vanished overnight. In fact, Google still absolute dominates the web, with roughly 90% of the global search engine market share. People are still typing billions of daily queries into that familiar blank search bar.

If your website has specifically answered the exact question the searcher asked, and you have a well-built website without broken links or outdated information and a well-designed Google Business Profile then your business has a chance of showing up in the AI Overview.
So, back to the searcher wanting someone to fix their French Drains. I chose this example specifically because the service provider could possibly be a Plumber, a Basement Water Proofer, or even a Landscaper depending on the exact issue. They might ask “I live in Pierpont; Ohio and I have water pooling around my house. I have a problem with my French Drain, who do I contact to look at it?” The website today that answers the questions people are actively searching for will be the ones showing up in the AI overviews.
Local SEO strategies seem to still be effective, but if your website was designed around keywords then you really should have someone redesign the content on your webpages. Just so that I really hit the nail squarely on the head and drive it home. Now is the time to redesign your company’s website if it was written around keywords. If you have thought about getting a website, but have been putting it off, now is like getting in on the ground floor of a new opportunity. A brand-new site that is professionally written for chatbots has a chance of being quoted directly in the AI Overviews.
