2nd Chance Boxing Club wrapped up the season yesterday in Clarksville, Tennessee going 0-3, but those scores do not tell the full story.

Mesha Burnstein and Ethan Hooper both fought their hearts out and lost split decisions by just ONE point each. Sometimes boxing goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t, and at our gym we teach our fighters how to lose too, because life doesn’t always go your way. I’m still proud of both of them for stepping in that ring and giving everything they had.

Then came the main event. Austyn Frederick was matched against the hometown fighter. Before the fight started, they announced the young lady had graduated high school with honors earlier that day. Congratulations to her, because this post is not directed at her personally at all.

But once that bell rang, Austyn controlled the fight from start to finish. Everyone in that building saw it. All the dieting, miles ran, sacrifices, discipline, blood, sweat, and tears my girl put in were taken from her in that decision.

What hurts most is not just what it does to Austyn, but also what it does to the other fighter. In boxing, honest results matter. Wins should be earned, and losses should build growth and character. That’s how fighters improve.

No matter what the judges said, I know what I watched, the crowd knew what they watched, and most importantly Austyn proved exactly who she is. I could not be more proud of this team. We’ll learn from it, grow from it, and get back to work Monday like we always do
