Friends of Athens PBJs,
With joyful hearts, we celebrate another year in which God has faithfully unified and loved the people of Athens. For 11 years now, people from all different walks of life have been meeting at the corner of College and Clayton to share a meal and be changed by friendship.
We'd like to share a few stories from these friendships and ask that you consider donating $5 or $10 to help sustain our providing food and bridging friendships and community between the homeless and non-homeless in Athens. We use these donations to fund weekly Sunday lunch gatherings, dinners for bi-weekly bible studies and other special events such as tailgates and holiday parties. In specific response to COVID-19, we have also decided that a portion of the proceeds will go to support two partner organizations - Our Daily Bread and Sparrow’s Nest Athens - as they continue to operate and provide vital services to our homeless friends in ways that we cannot. We are grateful for these organizations and their continued commitment to the homeless community in Athens, especially in these adverse times.
You can donate by venmo , or by clicking the "Donate" page on our website, athenspbjs.org. We also have $15 t-shirts for sale! You can buy one here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Wh_8SXkafTpA2TL4McukkJ-mv4W7VEViHCWxJtZzl9A/edit
Thank you for taking the time to read these stories and celebrate the friendships made through Athens PBJs!

Bridging Friendships and Building Community
One night in December 2007, at a local Atlanta restaurant, six friends began discussing the difficult and complicated issue of poverty. Each person shared her or his own idea about the best remedy for the epidemic. If one thing was clear it was the belief that there is no easy answer but there is a clear and present need.
Following the dinner, a few friends decided to prepare brown-bag meals and take them to the homeless in Atlanta- a regular, fairly common act of service. The experience was contagious, and they decided to take the simple act of service to Athens where they were students. Athens PBJs began.
The group’s focus was providing food to the hundreds of homeless people living in the city. In the first half of 2008 PBJs prepared and delivered over 1400 brown-bag meals to shelters and people in Atlanta. The organization had its start, but a change was on the way.
As they began to consider more the problem of homelessness, Athens PBJs leaders realized that there seemed to be a deeper need than the physical provision of food. The deeper, more unmet need was friendships and community. So in the summer of 2008 Athens PBJs’ focus shifted from providing food to using it as a medium to bridge the homeless and non-homeless populations in Athens.
