Yesterday, our Executive Director, Shannondore (Shane) Sims, had the honor of speaking at a recovery event hosted by Connect City Church on the topic of early childhood trauma, its lasting impact, and the journey of healing and recovery.
During the message, Shane referenced the famous line from Forrest Gump: “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” He then challenged the audience with a powerful reflection:
“But what about the children who are born into a world that doesn’t consist of chocolates? Or worse yet, the children who can see the chocolates, but are denied access to them?”
The message explored how trauma, neglect, instability, addiction, violence, and adverse childhood experiences can shape the lives of children and influence long-term behavioral and emotional outcomes. Shane also highlighted how the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) studies have long shown the connection between childhood trauma and many of the struggles people face later in life.
Most importantly, the message emphasized hope, healing, resilience, and recovery.
At People Living in Recovery, we believe healing is possible, cycles can be broken, and people are far more than the pain they have experienced.
We are grateful for opportunities to continue bringing trauma-informed conversations into our community and helping others understand the intersection of trauma, addiction, recovery, and restoration.
